Goals for English Language Education

Firstly, the aim is to help students comprehend the organization, usage, and learning processes of the English language. Enhancing students' proficiency is crucial, enabling them to acquire knowledge globally, build meaningful relationships, communicate effectively in professional settings, and expand their perspectives. Additionally, the curriculum seeks to guide students in developing independent language learning skills, fostering the understanding that mastering English is a lifelong journey essential for adapting to the rapid changes in society. Creating a supportive and engaging learning environment is also a priority, as is motivating students to find joy in both learning and using English.

Thinking Routines for Writing & Speaking

The English Department participates in the EDB Collaborative Research and Development SEED Project, “Thinking Routines for Writing (TRW),” which focuses on developing thinking, writing, and speaking skills to optimize learning both inside and outside the classroom. It also aims to enrich teachers' pedagogical approaches through professional development, fostering a holistic classroom environment. Through collaboration with the Curriculum Support Division of the NET Section EDB, teachers integrate Thinking Routines into their writing and speaking lessons. The scaffolding provided by Thinking Routines helps students relate topics to their lives, leading to more relevant and nuanced writing and speaking.

In recognition of successful implementation, English teachers have been invited to share their experience in various EDB ELT events. Our English teachers were also honored with the Gold and Outstanding Awards in the English Language Education category of the Outstanding e-Learning Awards (e-Learning Development Laboratory, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, The University of Hong Kong) for our innovative project of integrating Thinking Routines and Artificial Intelligence VR Cave.

English Week

The annual English Week revolves around a central theme that promotes essential values among students. A variety of engaging English activities are meticulously organized throughout the week to support this initiative.

Notable events include displays of inspirational quotes that encourage reflection on values and attitudes, as well as interactive discussions with teachers and English ambassadors that foster communication skills. Students can explore literature through exhibitions and quizzes, while film appreciation sessions promote critical thinking about emotional experiences depicted in films. Creative projects, such as acrostic poem writing, allow students to express their feelings towards their parents.

Further activities, including speaking challenges and debating contests, help develop public speaking and critical analysis skills. A highlight of the week is a collaborative fun fair that facilitates interdisciplinary learning through English, involving various departments.

English Speaking Days

Students utilize the target language to express their thoughts and experiences during English Speaking Days, which feature themes such as "Connecting with the World," "Spooky!," "Sports—Be Strong!," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town!," "Are You Green Enough?," and "Good Courtesy." These themes are closely tied to festival celebrations and the goals of the school year. Through this engagement, students gain a deeper understanding of different cultures and use English in authentic, meaningful contexts.
